Description

Wooh! Finished~ THIS GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK DID YOU KNOW THERE ISN'T AN UNDO BUTTON IN REAL LIFE?!?!

This is my first ever piece that I have done in this style with these materials! I used Sharpies and tried to contrast a lot, since there is a limited palette due tO IT BEING IN REAL LIFE. It scared me a lot to do this, because I feared I'd mess up a bunch. HAHA FEAR YOU CAN'T BREAK ME DOWN NOT TODAY XD

Well, anyway, I made a work in progress so the even if I messed up, D': , I would have something to work off of in the future. But luckily I didn't need it ^^

This is a very promising beginning! The artist said in the description that "in real life there is not the UNDO button", which is absolutely true (also from a philosophical point of view, by the way), but it might mean two things: the most obvious one is that even if you use a good rubber, it's very hard to have the image looking exactly as it did before; it's also possible, though, that the artist meant she has not used a previous pencil lineart to do this. If it was so, I would strongly recommend her never to use pencils anymore, because this is far better than all the realistic pencil drawings she has done!
The contrast is the most interesting thing here, in my opinion. The use of colour to obtain shading and depth is brilliant, particularly on the neck and the chin and under the eyebrow of the girl. The work on the hair is very well done: it can still improve, but already shows a remarkable maturity. The line of shadow on the upperlip, instead, might have been more round, and consequently more realistic. And the left eye should probably reflect some light, considering that the girl stays in a strong and direct light: light comes from the left and from above, from behind but maybe not as much as not reflect at all in ther left eye, because her eyes are huge and a bit prominent. But maybe the only problem in this drawing is that one has the impression that the same left eye is a little bit lower than it should. This, together with the lack of reflection in that eye, affects the impact of the whole, but in fact it is not a huge problem. Maybe the eye is a little out of his proper line, maybe the nose is a little strange, but these might be peculiarities of the face portrayed here! We don't know. In the end, little flaws make faces more interesting, sometimes.
In my opinion, there in no point in talking about originality in a portrait: the point here is not to create something unseen, but to give us the image and the "sensation", the "feeling" of someone, with her personality and mood, with her beauty and her being unique in all mankind. Beyond this, I repeat that the use of colour is very smart, here, which gives originality to the work, and increases impact.
The use of markers still can be refined, and maybe the perspective of the left shoulder is not perfect. Very little problems related to technique, just as much as the question about the simmetry of the eyes.
On the other hand, the decision of not defining much the right eye is brave and brilliant.
Once again, I think the artist has found her medium: this is a lovely work!
